In a week or so, there will be a Christmas tree in my apartment. Real, of course, smelling like the holidays and, eventually, decked out in holiday ornaments. Which is why I went shopping for, among other things, my 2008 ornament today.

In my family, it is traditional to have the regular old bulbs on the tree, but they serve as accent pieces, really. The real stars of the show are the ornaments that follow the journey each of us have traveled since we first came onto the scene. Each ornament is marked for its corresponding year. Each pertains, somehow, to something that happened that year. A success, a special event, whatever. It gets pretty eclectic.

This year’s ornament was pretty obvious. Nevertheless, it felt awfully good to get.
